Aussie Millions Poker Title stays in Melbourne for another year

So the Aussie Millions has reached its conclusion for another year – with another electric final table that saw local man Oliver Speidel walk away with the Main Event prize.

Though, in truth, he didn’t walk away with it at first – his first reaction was to get on the table with it and really get to know the cash by rolling around in it. One of the best celebrations we’ve seen, and absolutely understandable when you think of the week Spediel had: on top of the Main Event title, he finished runner-up in the $1000 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout, and placed 6th in the $1500 No-Limit Hold’em Bounty Event. Not a bad few days at the office!

It was another hugely successful Aussie Millions tournament, with a massive field of nearly 700 players scrapping it out for the title. There were some huge cash jackpots on offer at the really high-profile events, and we were glad to see some great charity events thrown into the mix, with some big names in Australian Poker turning out to support.

And the venue couldn’t have been better: Crown Casinos once again proved a fitting setting for the sort of intense, exciting tournament we’ve come to enjoy and expect. Crucially, Crown Casinos is a venue that has enough space for all of the different events, and the various qualifiers and eliminators, to run simultaneously – all without compromising on the luxury that the scale of the event (and the size of the final pot) demands.

All in all, it has been an event that leaves a positive impression of Poker in Australia: of a game that is going from strength to strength. There were plenty of overseas players in the field at Crown Casino, to be sure, but Australia’s poker scene was well represented, and it was an Australian man who ultimately took the title.

The Poker Tour is in good health as it starts another year, drawing players from the clubs and pubs and letting them try their hand on the bigger stage. And it’s important to recognise the contribution of online casinos and poker rooms to the popularity of the game both here in Australia and around the world. With live, real-time interactive poker rooms (and technology improving almost every month, it feels like), the online Casino Games are a great place for players to first find their love of the game. There might not be quite the pressure that Oliver Speidel felt at that last table, but we imagine there’s no better feeling in the world than when he laid down his pair of aces to win the pot.

We don’t know about you, but when we take an hour or two to sharpen our game in the online casino poker rooms, we treat ourselves to a little daydream about the Aussie Millions Main Event Title, and the gold ring that goes with it. That’s normal, right?
