A new casino for the Sunshine Coast?

The Australian economy benefits enormously from the proximity of growing Pacific markets – and none is bigger than China. Chinese tourism in Australia already brings massive benefits, and Tourism Australia predicts that the contribution to the Australian economy will be as much as AU$9billion per year by 2020.

And the major lure for China’s tourists? Australia’s exceptional range of world-class casinos and all the luxuries that come with them in resorts like Melbourne’s Crown Casino and Star City Casino in Sydney.

No surprise, then, that rumours have been circulating for a while about a proposed casino development on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

As far back as August, Clive Palmer, owner of the Hyatt Coolum, revealed that he was considering a major redevelopment of the Hyatt site – intending to create a resort that would attract a share of the International tourists that come to Australia every year to enjoy casino resorts.

And opinion in the region seems to lean heavily in favour of a new casino on the Sunshine Coast. The Hyatt Regency Coolum marketing director Pip Close suggested a casino would be ‘...an asset to the region,’

UDIA Sunshine Coast president Frazer Dean echoed her sentiment: ‘if Clive Palmer wants to fly Chinese tourists into the Sunshine Coast directly, if the Chinese want to gamble, what do you want to do to attract Chinese tourists? Build a casino that will attract more tourists. Isn't that what we are trying to do?’

Mr Dean suggested that the license money for a Casino on the Sunshine Coast could be invested in other projects designed to draw tourists and other business to the region – as had been successfully done in Cairns.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot has said that a well-planned casino development, with the hotels and other attractions that come with it, would see wider benefits in the community.

So watch this space: over the next few years you could be reading about a gleaming new Hyatt casino development whose aim will be to match the high standards of Australia’s internationally-regarded casinos.

The Hyatt Casino brand could soon be seen alongside Crown Casino, Star Casino Sydney and Conrad Jupiters – casinos that must rank not only as the best in Australia, but as some of the best in the world.
