Poker Rides All the Way to Brazil

In the last few years, we’ve seen the rise and rise of Poker in Australia. From the first Aussie Millions Tournament and the arrival on the scene of Joe Hachem, to professional players like Mark Vos, Tony G and Shane Warne, and the first WSOP coming to these shores soon, the game is going from strength to strength.

And it seems not just in Australia is Poker gaining ground: the WSOP is set to touch down in Brazil this month, and it should be some party!

The success will be in part due to the increased exposure that Poker has had in the mainstream media, and that in turn has been on the back of a massive swell in the numbers of players playing the game at online casinos.

The game has taken on a truly global character, and the spread of the WSOP to Australia and now to Brazil is just following on growing numbers of players from those countries who are taking their places at online Poker Rooms every hour of every day.

It’s to be hoped that Poker’s rise in popularity in Brazil is matched – as it was here in Australia – with the emergence of some great personalities who act as real ambassadors for the game. At last year’s Aussie Millions (held in the plush surroundings of Crown Casino Melbourne), we were really impressed by the number of charity events run by the likes of Shane Warne and Joe Hachem.

But, of course, what events like the Aussie Millions and the Brazil WSOP need most of all is players like you and me, many of whom have scrapped their way into the event at satellite qualifiers hosted by online casinos. It looks like PokerStars have this angle firmly in mind: David Carrion (PokerStars’ Director for Live Operations in Latin America – quite a job title!) told us he’s feeling confident about generating interest for the event.

He said, ‘we expect to attract bigger tournament fields by offering more chances to qualify online for free, and therefore increasing participation from many more enthusiasts of the sport.’

That sounds positive from our point of view. We really like a game or two of Poker at an online casino like Spin Palace Casino, or in a dedicated Poker Room, especially with the selection of games available, including the recent addition of some great casual ‘speed poker’ rooms that let you leave a hand you’ve folded. Throw in the chance to take a trip to Brazil and compete in a WSOP event, and you’ve got a tempting prospect. I heard some of their beaches put even ours in the shade...
