Perth gets a new Crown Casino in Australia

James Packer was in a good mood in front of the press this week, when he announced that, to cap the massive overhaul that the site has been undergoing since back in 2004, the Burswood Casino would become the third Crown Casino complex – the second in Australia.

The casino’s coronation will come at the end of the extensive refurbishment programme, and the newest Crown is set to open its doors in late 2012.

It’s been a royal makeover for the Perth tourist attraction, with Crown Casinos sinking as much as AU$750million into the project. That includes an upgrade of the existing casino infrastructure, and, in keeping with Crown Casino’s stated aim of drawing more of Asia's high rollers to Australian Casinos, some serious luxury, too.

That includes a couple of ‘mansion’ suites that have cost as much as AU$11million each, and three private jets to bring international VIPs to Australia’s newest casino resort, and to the exclusive ‘Sky Room’, where the gaming tables will enjoy views out over the Swan River.

Also on the drawing board is a new golf course to replace the old one, which stands on the site of the new Perth stadium: ‘things like golf are part of trying to build a tourism destination that is truly world class,’ says Mr. Packer. ‘We want to do much more here. We believe in this city, we believe in this state, we think as a company we are lucky to be here.'

Mr. Packer has made no secret of his desire to bring International gambling tourism to Australia, and to his Crown Casinos in particular:

‘this change will allow Burswood to utilise the internationally recognised Crown brand in order to increase the number of international and interstate visitors to Perth, especially from the strategically important China market,’ he explained. ‘This is a very exciting development for Burswood as it strives to more effectively compete against the other integrated resorts in the Asian region.’

But Mr. Packer also called on the Australian Government to help draw overseas tourist dollars to our shores – Asian travellers especially. He suggested that if it were made easier to arrange flights from destinations throughout Asia direct to Perth, and if Asian tourists were more easily able to obtain visas, Australia and her casinos would see immediate rewards.

Asian countries, and the casinos that are driving growth all around the Pacific, have been a real success story in an uncertain economic climate – another Crown Casino establishing a reputation in Perth can only help draw some of the success to Australian shores.
