Inside bets - a bet placed on a number or small combination of numbers in roulette
Insurance - appears in blackjack and is offered as a bet if the dealer is showing an up card of an ace. Insurance bets win if the dealer's down card turns out to be worth 10, so making 21 instantly, but loses if it does not
Jackpot - a big win on a machine, or the biggest available on that machine
Jacks or Better - seen in video poker, if you are dealt a pair of jacks or higher, you win
Joker - Card with the jester on, found in packs. The 53rd card in a deck
Juice - commission taken by the casino, US
Kicker - in poker, an odd high card in a hand which doesn't fit in with a sequence
Ladderman - casino worker who supervises baccarat games from a high chair over the table
Laying the odds - some odds are so in favour of the likely winner that winning wagers get paid less than the amount bet, known as 'laying the odds'
Layout - Cloth on a gaming table which displays the game layout
Load up - To play the maximum number of coins allowed in a slot machine game
Long run - number of rounds of play needed to be completed for the number of wins to losses to arrive at a point where the difference won't change due to the build-up effect of future plays
Loose - a slot machine which has a big payout
Low poker - poker where the pot is won by the lowest hand
Marker - cheque written by a player who has credit with the casino - like an IOU
Martingale - betting system where the player doubles their bet amount after each loss
Match play - Often found in card tournaments, players play a number of games against each other and get points for winning
Mechanic - a cheating dealer - slang term
Mini-Baccarat - smaller version of Baccarat with less formality, players and dealers
Money Put In Action – The amount of cash you turn-over while gambling- not the same as the amount of cash you bring to play with. Sometimes used by casinos to judge who should get free gifts or 'comps'
Natural - a two card hand of 21 - found in blackjack
Natural - In Blackjack. A two-card hand of 21 points. In baccarat a natural is a two-card total of 8 or 9
Negative Expectation – Amount of money a player expects to lose on average after a certain amount of play or after playing a certain number of hands
Net Winnings - The amount won in full minus the original bet
Non-value Chip - a chip which has a value determined by the amount when buying and the amount of chips taken, so a buy-in of $250 for 50 chips equates to a value of $5 per chip
Number Pool – A range of numbers from which you can choose, ie a lottery pool involves numbers 1 to 60
Nut - A fixed amount a gambler decides they want to win in one day
Odds - the expected chances of winning, or the figure by which the house promises to multiply someone's bet by if they win
On tilt - used to describe someone who is playing wildly after getting a hand
Open - the first person to put a bet down in poker
Outside bets - bets which are found on the outside part of a roulette layout - feature bets on collections of 12 or 18 numbers with one chip
Overlay - Used to describe a bet where the player has an edge over the house
Paint - Refers to a 'picture' card in a pack ie queen, king, jack
Palette - Implement used in baccarat to move cards
Pass - To not bet in a card game
Pat -a hand which does not need more cards in draw poker, can also be used in Blackjack to mean a hand of 17 points minimum
Payline - found on slot machines-a line across the screen which symbols must line up to in order to result in a payout
Payoff - the amount of cash a player gets back following a win
Payoff Odds - odds displayed in a casino demonstrating how much you you can expect to win back for each winning bet
Payout Percentage - Payout percentage of every dollar played which the programme is set to return back to the player
Payout Table or Payoff Schedule – a sign on a video machine or slot machine which tells you how much each winning hand will give you for the number of coins or credits you have played
Pigeon - An unknowledgeable, inexperienced gambler
Pit - part of a casino floor around which a cluster of tables are arranged - this area is normally restricted to casino staff
Pit Boss – a supervisor who oversees a collection of tables - the man in charge of a pit
Pit Manager - runs all the table games according to the casino rules and sorts out any problems which arise. Lays down the law and deals with unhappy players
Playing the Rush - Refers to a poker player who is on a hot streak raking in large amounts of money with single hands or a number of hands in succession
Plug - refers to part of a shuffling technique used when cards are dealt from a 'shoe' holding a number of decks
Pocket cards - the initial cards dealt to a player face down in poker
Point (The Point) – Used in craps to refer to the number set for the come-out roll
Poker - card game which normally involves ranked hands and a number of betting rounds. Ancient format with many variations - texas hold'em and seven card stud are among the most common and are often played in homes as well as casinos
Pot - Appears in poker and refers to the amount of money in the middle of the table which builds up as a hand progresses. Whoever wins the hand eventually takes the pot
Press a bet - adding on winnings to the bet you are playing currently
Pressing - someone is referred to as pressing a wager when they stack winnings on with the original bet
Probability -the calculation which gives an idea as to the likelihood of something happening. Probabilities are defined as numbers from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain)
Progression betting - a system which involves putting a bet up or cutting it down over a series of plays according to a formula worked out beforehand
Progressive - relates to slot machine jackpots which increase with each coin bet
Pull Tab, Pulltab - A kind of lottery game offering free tickets or prizes of a few hundred dollars
Punch board - another style of lottery or bingo where players punch out a slot on a board in an effort to win something, either material prizes or money
Punter - A slang or familar name for someone who likes a bet
Punto Banco - The European term for Baccarat
Push - hand which is a draw between the player and the dealer - a round where neither wins
