Quads - found in poker and relates to four of a kind, for example, four kings
Qualifier - also found in poker-the lowest value a hand must have in order for it to be able to take part in the pot
Quartet pools - run by the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club and involve choosing the first four places in the right order for an event
Rack - term used to describe a container made of plastic, used for carrying casino chips, coins etc
Rake – used to describe the fee a casino charges for each hand of poker played under its roof
Rank - Value of a hand of cards, found in poker
Rated – a player who is 'rated' is defined by a casino as having an above-average or professional level of skill
RFB – Means 'Room, Food and Beverages' in relation to 'comps'
Riffling (Or card Riffling) – method of shuffling cards which involves cutting a deck in half and riffling them together by turning up the corners of each half with the thumbs of each hand and releasing them so they then interchange with oneanother
River - the last card dealt in a hand of Stud or Hold'em - the 'river card'
Round of Play - a hand or passage of play which involves one bet or a number of bets. For example, a round in poker runs from the dealing of the cards to the winning of the pot
RVP - American casino term meaning 'Recreational Vehicle Parking'
Sawdust Joint – American slang for a more low-brow or lower-rate casino
Sawbuck - Term for $10
Scared Money - cash that someone can't afford to lose gambling
Session - A period of gambling play, either as a whole or while at one game
Set - Found in Pai-Gow Poker - players must divide their cards into two sets -one of a five card hand and one of a two card hand
Seventh Street - Seven card stud term for last round of betting when all the players have seven cards
Shark - A player of a high standard posing as a novice early in the game, often relates to card games
Sharker, Sharper, or Cardsharp - someone who cheats
Sharp – Someone who bets intelligently
Shill - Someone who plays for the house, ie someone filling an empty seat at a table until more real players join the table
Shiner - A very small mirror or reflective surface used by someone cheating to glimpse cards they would otherwise be unable to see
Shoe – Wooden or plastic box used to hold and deal cards
Short Run - A quick series of bets on game events
Showdown - Describes when the last remaining players in a poker round have to show their cards after the final betting
Shuffle Tracking – Found in blackjack - a high-end technique used by card counters
Shuffle Up – The dealer shuffling cards too early
Shuffling (Card Shuffling) – Broad term used to describe the mixing of cards before playing a game, or before a game can continue, ie riffling - see above
Shutter - window covering a number on a bingo card which can be reused. The shutter is pulled over the number after it has been called
Silver Mining - used to describe the practice of walking around the casino looking for coins left in slot machines by previous players
Single - a straightforward bet on a single number
Singleton - a card which is the only one of its rank in a hand, found in poker
Sixth Street - the fourth round of betting in seven-card stud when players have six cards
Skin - $1
Skin Game - A poker game where two people are cheating and co-operating in the deception
Skinning the Hand - Method used by a poker cheat to get rid of extra cards
Slot Club Member - Someone who is a member of a fruit or slot machine club, perks often involve the chance of winning credits or cash
Slot Walking - Another term used to describe walking around looking for coins left behind by players in slot machines
Snake Eyes – A two rolled in craps - because they resemble eyes and are a bad roll for the roller or shooter
Soft Count – In relation to machines - a bill validator, or a drop box collection
Soft Count Room - Room where the soft count is conducted
Soft Hand - A hand which has an ace which is counted as eleven in Blackjack
Spinner - A streak of winning for any activity
Spooking – Illegal form of blackjack cheating where someone stands behind the dealer and attempts to spot and communicate what his hole card is
Spot – Found in Keno and refers to any number between 1 and 80 marked on a ticket by a player
Stack – A neat vertical pile of chips - in roulette, normally a column of 20
Standing Hand - A blackjack hand which has a hard total of 17 or more. This is likely to bust if the player 'hits' and gets one more card and they are therefore likely to stand
Steaming – Used to describe a blackjack player betting out of control in an aggressive manner in order to try to claw back a losing run
Stiff - A blackjack hand of two cards which is not considered good but which may bust if only hit once, for example a hard 13
Straight Keno - Regular form of Keno involving marking numbers on a ticket
Streak Betting - A betting system where the player increases or decreases the size of the bet depending on what happened on the previous round or rounds
Stripping, in relation to 'Card Stripping' – A shuffling method which turns around the order of cards in the deck. For example if a dealer were to take the first card off the top of a deck and place it on the table and then take the second card off the top and place it on top of the first card and so on
Stud Poker - Basic form of poker with up cards and with one or more concealed cards called hole cards
Suit - A suit is one of the four card formats found in card decks - diamonds, hearts, clubs or spades
Sulky – Found in harness horse racing with single seats - the 'sulky' is a U-shaped shaft with a single seat on two wheels
Surrender - Sometimes found in Blackjack and is the option to give up or 'surrender' half of your bet in exchange for not having to play out a hand
System – A form of betting typically based on some form of maths and usually following rules as to when a bet should go up or down
